Quality of foam plastic: foam plastics used in aquaristics with live animals must in any case be tested for harmful substances, as most plastics release problematic plasticisers into the water.
All plastics used by jbl have passed this test and do not release any harmful substances into the water.
Cleaning of plastics: rinsing soiled filter sponges under warm running water for many months and then inoculating them with filter bacteria (jbl filterstart) before reinstalling them is sufficient.
As mechanical cleaning will never ensure complete cleaning and dirt will remain in the filter sponge, it is recommended that you change the filter sponges every 6 months or so.
If you leave a cleaned filter sponge in a jar of clean fresh water overnight, you will find out the next morning how much dirt is still in this supposedly clean sponge.
Inoculation of the filter material with cleaning bacteria: the first inoculation of the filter material with cleaning bacteria takes about 1-2 weeks in fresh water, in seawater the time is twice as long.
If the filter material has already been used, the repopulation time is doubled, as repopulation does not take place as easily on dead bacterial strains.
Adding concentrated cleaning bacteria as in jbl filterstart reduces the biological start-up time to about 24 h.
Another reason is to populate the existing settling space in the filter material with beneficial bacteria in such a way that pathogenic germs do not find any place to spread.
In the meantime, this has been scientifically proven.
